Endurance was halted several times as she manoeuvred through the heavy pack before being completely beset on January 18th 1915 only 60 miles from her destination on the Filchner Ice Shelf. The stamp shows her awaiting an off-shore wind to loosen the pack on January 6th 1915.

Expeditions: British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04 in Discovery. British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 in Nimrod. Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-17 in Endurance. Shackleton-Rowett Antarctic Expedition 1921-22 in Quest. Discoveries: Beardmore Glacier, South Magnetic Pole, Caird Coast .

Endurance, Length 144 feet, beam: 25 feet, 350 grt. Built Framneas Shipyard, Sandefjiord, Norway and launched 1912, as Polaris, a 3-masted barquentine with auxiliary steam for polar tourism and polar bear hunting! Purchased by Shackleton and renamed Endurance. Voyage: Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-17. Departed Plymouth 6.08.14, Arrived Grytviken, South Georgia 15.11.14. Departed 5.12.14 for Weddell Sea and was beset 18.01.15. Drifted northerly in Weddell Sea for the next 9 months. Crushed by ice in Weddell Sea, 21.10.15, sank 22.11.15.
