Cave Cove, King Haakon Bay, South Georgia
Oil, 16 x 20 inches, 2009, £375
A black browed albatross approaches a nest on the cliffs overlooking Cave Cove. Here, on the evening of May 10th 1916, Sir Ernest Shackleton and five of his men landed after an epic open boat journey across the stormy Scotia Sea. He had sailed in the James Caird , a 22 foot whaler, to South Georgia in search of rescue for the rest of his crew now marooned for the winter on Elephant Island after the loss of his ship Endurance, crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea. Mt Ashley lies across the calm waters of King Haakon Bay.
